Sustainable Food and the NHS
NHS trusts spend about £500 million a year on food and catering. The government is committed to the economic, environmental, social and health benefits of sustainable food procurement, but this is difficult to translate into practice at a local level. In 2004 the Better Hospital Food Programme (BHFP) commissioned The King's Fund to identify opportunities for managing food procurement sustainably and promoting healthy eating in acute hospitals. Reporting on the project, this paper includes a framework to help organisations to assess their procurement and catering practices, and recommends policies, menu designs and contract specifications.

DASH Diet May Substantially Lower Risk for CHD as Well as Blood Pressure
The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet may substantially lower the risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) as well as blood pressure, according to the results of a randomized controlled trial reported August 31 online in Circulation. The effects of the DASH diet were strongest in blacks. The 2005 US Dietary Guidelines and the American Heart Association have recommended the DASH diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts, while reducing intake of fats, red meat, sweets, and sugar-containing beverages.

Healthy Diet Linked to Lower Risk for Nuclear Cataract in Women
"Diet was the strongest risk factor related to reduced risk of nuclear cataract in this sample of postmenopausal women," the study authors conclude. "Smoking and obesity were also contributors. Lifestyle improvements that include healthy diets, smoking cessation, and avoiding obesity may substantively lower the need for and economic burden of cataract surgery in aging American women."
