In December 2022, NHS North East London (NEL) put out a Request for Quotation for Carbon Literacy Training for North East London Integrated Care System. CSH was invited to submit a bid to include various carbon literacy, quality improvement and leadership opportunities and to create spaces for professionals from across the system to learn together. The package of support CSH tendered and which was accepted included: multiple Board Level Trainings, a Green Team competition, access to the full range of CSH online courses, and places on the SusQI Academy.
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare's NHS Forest project is proud to have worked alongside American Forests, the US non-profit organisation that created Tree Equity Score and the Woodland Trust to bring the Tree Equity Score to the UK. This is a pioneering programme to ensure that developers have the tools and resources they need to calculate tree density in urban areas and help them to plan for the future, ensuring that there are enough trees to provide show a net positive impact on the health and wellbeing of local communities.
In June of this year, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) commenced a Green Team Competition in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. Through the Green Team Competition, six teams from HHFT were selected to engage in our award-winning programme in sustainability in quality improvement (SusQI) that transforms expert knowledge into action. The competition has brought anticipated annual savings to the Trust of £443,119 and 252,112 kgCO2e. This is the carbon footprint equivalent of driving 744,572 miles in an average car (or 917 return trips between Basingstoke and Edinburgh). .
The Lancet Countdown 2023 sheds light on some of the most concerning and interconnected factors threatening the well-being of individuals, public health, and healthcare systems on a global scale. As the report emphasises, "the world is heading in the wrong direction". The severity of today's health issues is obvious. Yet, it serves as a forewarning of the dangers for our future and a reminder of the commitment we collectively must take in delivering such ambition and transformative climate action.
