I was approached by a prominent Sunday newspaper, no, not the News of the World, although I have already appeared twice in that Sunday institution, to ask which services would be cut to pay for new cancer drugs. My reply? None, we could pay for new cancer drugs by reducing the NHS electricity bill. In spite of good work done by the Carbon Trust and estate mangers the bill is still hundreds of millions a year and hospitals are still too hot. Let’s cut carbon before we cut service.

NHS Devon Corporate Sustainability Plan with Action Plan for 2007/08
The development of a Devon Primary Care Trust Corporate Sustainability Plan was initiated in November 2007 as our local response to the ‘Taking the temperature towards an NHS response to global warming’ (The NHS Confederation, 2007) report which identified key challenges for the NHS. A Corporate Sustainability Task Group was established in January 2008, chaired by Dr Virginia Pearson, Director of Public Health. This group has taken account of an increasing number of reports and documents relating to how NHS organisations address the sustainable development agenda and produced an action plan. This is a two-phase process, with the Corporate Sustainability Plan addressing many of the sustainable energy issues. The focus of the second phase will be the wider elements of a Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy.

Is Renewable Energy the Biggest Threat to Land Conservation?
I'm a conservationist. I was a conservationist before I was an EcoGeek. There is very little land on earth left in a sem-natural state, and I believe that we should keep as much of that land as natural as possible forever. Unfortunately, that belief does sometimes collide with my belief that we need to increase renewable energy production as fast as possible. The Nature Conservancy estimates that renewable energy will occupy some 73,000 square miles of land by 2030, meaning that renewable energy could be the biggest threat to land conservation in America. The only thing that comes even close is real estate development.
