  1. Marginal Abatement Cost Curves (MACCs)

Marginal Abatement Cost Curves (MACCs) provide an assessment of the level of emissions reduction which a range of measures could deliver at a given point in time, against a projected baseline level of emissions. They show how much CO2 each measure could save (the level of abatement potential) and the associated cost per tonne of CO2.

  2. P4CR Procuring for Carbon Reduction

The NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy recognises that procuring in a low carbon way is a major challenge. This is why the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA), the Department of Health and the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) have developed this guidance for procurement professionals. The Procuring for Carbon Reduction (P4CR) working document will help you reduce carbon emissions when buying goods and services for the NHS. It is a programme with a range of supporting materials, resources and tools and since it is still in its evolutionary stage we would welcome your views on making it even better.

  3. Estimate of the Carbon Footprint of the US Health Care Sector

Despite heightened worldwide interest in sustainable health care, the carbon footprint of the US health care sector has not yet been estimated. Quantifying the environmental impact of health care is important to determine the potential value of mitigation efforts and to reduce harm associated with health care delivery. We estimated the carbon footprint of the US health care sector, defined as total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions attributable to the production of health care goods and services. Chung JW, Meltzer DO. 4. St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust: Case Study

The Epsom & St. Helier NHS Trust in Surrey has a utility bill of more than £1.5m a year. Following Carbon Trust surveys at each of its four sites, it was estimated that £65,000 could be saved annually through upgrading lighting and heating control, and replacing boilers. A new CHP system could lead to a reduction of a further £150,000
