Description
The 20th century witnessed rapid world urbanization, with the global urban proportion rising from 13% in 1900 to 49% in 2005. In terms of numbers this is a change from 220M urban dwellers in 1900 to 3.3bn in 2007 –a 15-fold increase. This article looks at what has caused this change and what it may mean to have half the world’s population living in urban areas.
